Yeah, I've heard of the boot for habitual drunkeness...poor sob-he either turned himself in, or a beloved family member aimed the shoe at his butt by turning him in. They at least gave him a chance to stop drinking, before slamming the door on him-not that I condone shunning for clearly uncontrollable problems. This situation fits in with my experience concerning bars, alcohol abuse, and heavy drinking-and JWs in Northern California. Thanks, Shoshana.

JW's and Pubs/Bars
by Heatmiser ini have noticed on past threads from posters from other countries than the usa that they would be hanging out in pubs and such while still jw's.
in the us i believe that going to bars would pretty much be a df/da offense.
in other countries is the policy different?

Avi-I'm talking about heavy drinking as it stands alone (or in conjunction with going to bars). Of all the cases of disfellowshipping that involved drinking, there was always some other conduct besides the drinking involved that together resulted in the disfellowshipping (like a snort of coke, or a cigarette, or a drunken driving arrest, or a roll in the hay, or disturbing the peace arrests, etc.). If possible, can you elaborate on the case/s that were simply an occurrence of heavy drinking and disfellowshipping-how did it come out, how many people were involved, where did it occur, was it habitual or a one time thing...etc. Thanks, Shoshana

Going into bars (US) is not a DF offense. In fact, a JW could be a bartender (I knew one when I was a kid). Heavy drinking never resulted in disfellowshipping, at least not without other forbidden activities involved, on top of the drinking. While frequenting bars could be frowned upon and might result in a social distancing for some, alone it wouldn't even result in "counsel." Where do you draw the line? Most big hotels (where JWs stay for conventions) have bars (heck, the rooms are equipped with "mini-bars"). Lots of restaurants have bars. Lots of bars serve food (like restaurants). Does anyone know of someone who got the boot for the sole reason of going into a bar? Shoshana. Edited to add: That picture of me was taken in a bar...Law students can't live without bars.

What does property cost where you live?
by ball. ini just saw on tv that a 3 bedroom detached property with swimming pool in florida costs the exact same as my 2 bedroom apartment on the coast in england.
i was totally suprised by this.
as there are quite a few american posters here, i am curious as to housing costs in other areas.

My very small (under 700 square feet) condo in a "very trendy" wine country town appraised last summer for over $300K (USD). The house I live in in a "not so trendy" wine country town is over 1000 square feet, with a cottage out back, in a desirable neighborhood, would sell in a week for at least $420K (USD). I get inquiries on both properties quite often. Here, real estate prices have been increasing every month for nearly eight years, at staggering rates. But most people around here consider this area to be the absolute best place on earth to live. I happen to agree. Shoshana

Home from Oaxaca
by La Capra ini had a fabulous time in oaxaca city, and on the oaxacan coast-i'm all brown and relaxed, and i now know i don't care for the moles (had a few of those made by the premier chefs of oaxaca-didn't make nasty faces, but they just don't do it for my palette).
looked at (and bought) some fabulous art, and generally stayed "medicated" as much of the time as possible.
i saw no sign of jw activity, in either place, but saw the obligatory pair of mormon boys on the coast, in their starched shirts and ties in 85 degree heat with 90 percent humidity.

All of my travel companions got mildly attacked by various intestinal discomfort, except for me (YAY!). I was downright dogmatic (some skills from being raised in a cult can be helpful) about the ice and unpeeled produce. They weren't. It's good to be home. Happy Belated Chanukah, Christmas, Shoshana's Birthday and New Year everyone. Shoshana

Just finished the last of the midterms...WooHoo. The properties professor really nailed us bad. We all left feeling violated, so we hit the bars. Tomorrow I jet away for two weeks in the sun. I'm all atwitter. I don't know how I will make it through teaching all day tomorrow. I'm too giddy because I survived midterms and I don't think I failed. Happy holidays everyone, I'll see you when I get back. Shoshana

I give up, I'm sick
by La Capra inafter a week plus of roller coaster symptoms and complete hoarseness, the fever finally hit me yesterday, and i am officially sick.
had to call in sick, so the little algebrators and geometers get to annoy a sub all day instead of me.
and i did all the right things for the last month: flu shot, took lots of vitamins, immunity boosters, liquids and rest.

Thanks everyone, lots of Progresso chicken soup (with curry from the spice rack), tea with honey and totties consumed. I still have a slight fever, but it's out of the triple digits. My dog kept me company all day (except for when he was trying to attack the gardner). Still no voice, but my silence may be a good thing. Back to the Rule Against Perpetuities. Shoshana

What Ways Did You Rebel Against The Elders & The "Truth"?
by minimus ini used to get a kick out of how some people used to push the elder's buttons.
sisters would wear a dress that was 1 inch above the knee just to get the brothers going.
or brothers would grow something a little longer than a mustache......what did you do to exert your independence??

I wouldn't do this to anyone now, even to the elders in my old congregation, but I used to out think and out maneuver them, and then let them know I had done it. I could see their next four or five steps, even before they did, so I could get them on a wrong tack pretty easily then slam them with an honest denial (with hard evidence, like alibi), or simply the contradiction of their position. It was too easy to trip up the elders in their circular or faulty logic. I realize now it really wasn't their fault they weren't too bright or educated. I never answered questions, only asked 'em, and volunteered information on my own, and never what they wanted to know (you see, even though all their kids made stuff up to turn me in for, I never did anything that I could really get in trouble for). When I was a teenager, a new ready-made elder moved to our congregation with his family. He was very bright probably secretly college-educated by his incredibly wealthy family, and was impossible to trip up. The other elders never talked to me without him after he arrived. He played my same game, so our conversations rarely went anywhere. That's when I decided to go to college to rebel. Shoshana
